Subspecies (1991)

The Plot: 3 college students travel to Transylvania to conduct research in folklore when they run into the local vampires who are feuding amongst each other

Talk about your bad luck. When you are doing your senior thesis on Romanian folklore and you travel to Transylvania at a time that just so happens to be the the same time an ancient Vampire power struggle between the 2 sides of vampirism, one the career minded rule over the world type and the misunderstood, handsome vampire who needs to feast on the blood of others but does it in a more humane way. But hey! them's the breaks! At first you may think you have a journalistic scoop but then they biting begins.

Has anyone seen my nail clippers?

Radu represents the dark side of vampirism. He is unkempt, likes dark tombs, attacks innocent women for their blood, drinks from the ancient bloodstone of power, has a miniature army of demons at his beckon call and a severe drooling problem. This could be why he can never just seduce his prey. he drools. ALOT. Definitely a turn off.  He also hates his handsome benevolent half brother Stefan, who, yes is a vampire himself, but chooses to contribute to society by studying the nocturnal habits of animals. But Radu gets a bit too ambitious and goes after Stefan's girlfriend. 

Little known fact: Demons can do an infinite number of sit ups

Radu uses every trick such as his demons. And by the way, these demons may be tiny, but they all sport 6 pack abs. There must be quite the gym in the demon underworld. Eventually Stefan , with help from his shotgun filled with blessed wooden rosary bead pellets have to face off against Radu. There's rosary buckshot, sword fights, stakings, a beheading, the whole nine yards! luckily handsomeness always defeats homeliness and Stefan bites his girlfriend inviting her to live the eternal life of pretty vampire people thus truly living happily ever, ever, ever, ever after.

Do i have something on my lip?

Subspecies is fun in a vampire trope way. It delivers in all the trappings of a vampire movie plus lots of drooling. The story could have been more action packed, we get too much time where nothing really is happening. I give Subspecies five drooling vampires.

Candyman

Candyman (1992) The Plot: A graduate student working on her thesis on folklore legends finds more than what she bargained for!   Despite the title, there is no candy in Candyman. Instead we get bees. Many, many bees. The worst of which are the bees filling a toilet. Toilet bees should not be a thing. It's probably the most disturbing thing in this movie. We should thank our lucky stars that we don;t have to check our toilets for bees on a regular basis.  My God! Toilet bees!   Candyman tells the story of a boogyman with a hook for a hand that appears when his name is said 5 times while gazing into a mirror. Go ahead, try doing that. I dare you. BWAHAHAHA! Virginia Madsen  doesn't believe this so she does that...and hilarity ensues! OK maybe not, death ensues. But not before she gets kissed by Candyman who has a mouthful of bees! Slugs (1988) The Plot: Toxic waste mutates slugs and the townsfolk get more than they bargained for.   Slugs. Gross but harmless, right? Sure! Until they are exposed to toxic waste, and then they mutate...into killers! Oh you may think they are slow, and that their brains may only hold the most limited ability to only process the most basic functions to survive; but that would only apply to the garden variety non-toxic waste exposed slugs. (pun intended) Mike Brady, yes, Mike Brady,is the head of the department of health in a sleepy little town who gets caught up in the investigation of some mysterious deaths in town. He is the first to theorize that slugs are the culprit.  Of course, most people think he's nuts. But Mike Brady always gets his gastropod mollusc.
