Slaughterhouse Rock
Slaughterhouse Rock (1988)
The Plot: The ghost of a deceased heavy metal band singer helps a man defeat the evil demon that has possessed his brother.
For a movie about a heavy metal band with Rock in the title, there is very little rock music at all. The movie centers around a band, Body Bag that was killed on stage which fortunately, they can be contacted in the afterlife. Led by Toni Basil (of Oh Mickey you're so fine fame), she is the friendly dead heavy metal ghost who can show you how to defeat cannibalistic demons. It's refreshing stance to see a heavy metal band fight demons instead of worshipping them.

Toni Basil channeling her inner Beetlejuice |
Toni had to do a bunch of research in libraries in order to find out how to defeat the demons. Yes, in a movie called Slaughterhouse Rock, there is a montage of Toni Basil browsing in a library. Of course, said book is like 3 feet in length bound in human skin, just sitting there amongst the copies of Wuthering Heights and Sense and Sensibility. Once armed with the secrets, it's determined our heroes must travel to Alcatraz to defeat the demon. Yes, Alcatraz, because why not??

Alex likes to sleep above the cover...4 feet above the covers! |
Once in Alcatraz the demon who is now possessing our hero's Alex's brother Richard, goes on a killing spree picking off Alex's friends one at a time. The kills are not too original either, twisting a neck, punch thru the back of the skull. Pretty standard fare. I expected a bit more originality from our demon, but alas. Toni Basil is able to inspire Alex to defeat the demon and go on to live a life filled with therapy no doubt for surviving the night but seeing his friends murdered. At least he knows there is an afterlife since that's where Toni Basil was communicating from.

Can anybody lend me a hand? |
Slaughterhouse Rock has all the makings of a great horror movie. Heavy Metal, ghosts, demonic possessions, boof of the dead, Alcatraz, a bevy of 20 years olds begging to be ritualistically killed. But somehow , it doesn;t quite pull it all together. I give it 5 book of the deads.
