The Last Voyage of the Demeter

The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)

The plot: A vampire on a boat

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a movie in a tough spot. It is based upon part of Bram Stoker's Dracula novel, where the sailing ship Demeter is used to transport Dracula in his coffin to England. Since we all have read the book and have seen Francis Ford Coppola's movie, we know Dracula will survive the voyage and kill off everyone on board.

I sure hope there isn't a vampire behind me

It starts of well enough, with the "let's get a crew together" stage. This is similar to the "let's get the band back together" phase but with sailors instead of musicians. You're welcome.  The Captain, in all his grizzled mutton chopped glory, needs recruits to sail to England., Luckily, nobody knows there will be a blood thirsty vampire on board, so he quickly assembles a crew. Then the fun begins.

The grizzledness of the Captain is off the charts

People start disappearing one by one. They find a woman in a coffin on board. Stowaway? Perhaps not. It does take them a while to figure out what's going on. Granted, easy mistake to make as the theory of blood thirsty vampire picking off folks one at a time would also be low on the list of my theories if I was on board.

They do discover that the sunlight will burn bitten people to death. This does not force them to think of a plan to get the vampire out in the sunlight though, which in hindsight, was too big a mistake to overcome. Of course, if they did overcome that and kill Dracula, then we would've had a shorter Bram Stoker novel and alot less Dracula lore in this world.

Much too late for sunblock

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a good looking movie, but ultimately cannot overcome its limitations in the familiarity of the story from the audience point of view. I give it 5 blood thirsty vampires
