Werewolf: The Beast Among Us

Image
Werewolf: The Beast Among Us (2012) The Plot: A team of monster hunters chase down a werewolf When your village is under torment by a werewolf, there are not too many things you can do. But one of those things is to call a team of all-star monster hunters. Sort of like a Victorian era Avengers. There is the stoic Cowboy leader, posh but deadly aristocratic dagger thrower, Davy Crockett Frontiersman, and bad ass chick with a crossbow, among others. Yes, this movie does try to answer the much anticipated question: who would win in a fight? A cowboy or a werewolf?  A cowboy and an aristocrat walk into a bar it would seem there must be a good back story as to how all these fighters came to be in each other's company, but we don't get too much of that. I, for one, would like to know the story of how a cowboy came to be a werewolf hunter. Were there werewolves in the American southwest? Or did he have to travel abroad and put in a semester of hands on werewolf hunting in Transylva...

Subspecies

Image
Subspecies (1991) The Plot: 3 college students travel to Transylvania to conduct research in folklore when they run into the local vampires who are feuding amongst each other Talk about your bad luck. When you are doing your senior thesis on Romanian folklore and you travel to Transylvania at a time that just so happens to be the the same time an ancient Vampire power struggle between the 2 sides of vampirism, one the career minded rule over the world type and the misunderstood, handsome vampire who needs to feast on the blood of others but does it in a more humane way. But hey! them's the breaks! At first you may think you have a journalistic scoop but then they biting begins. Has anyone seen my nail clippers? Radu represents the dark side of vampirism. He is unkempt, likes dark tombs, attacks innocent women for their blood, drinks from the ancient bloodstone of power, has a miniature army of demons at his beckon call and a severe drooling problem. This could be why he can never...

Gargoyles

Image
Gargoyles (1972) The Plot: Gargoyles arrive in the Southwest desert and start terrorizing the populace Gargoyles are definitely misunderstood. They first pick a desert where they have been dormant for 500 years before waking up in the time of bell bottoms and halter tops, 1972. Needless to say, they were a bit grumpy. I imagine waking up from a 500 year incubation period would produce some stiffness in the bones at least.  Gargoyles just want to look menacingly over your shoulder while you read. Our heroes here are Dr. Boley who is some type of scientist doing research. Could be an archeologist or perhaps geologist. Some kind of -ist I'm sure. He brings along his college age daughter Diana on the desert archeological dig. As one does. She seems excited to do this too. The early 70s was a weird time. They soon run into some gargoyles in the desert. The good doctor survives the first gargoyle encounter but one of the gargoyles was killed when hit by a truck. The good doctor ta...

The Beyond

Image
The Beyond (1981) The Plot: a woman inherits a hotel in Louisiana that just so happens to host one of the cursed 7 gateways to hell. Liza, our protagonist in The Beyond gets both good news and bad news one day. The good news: She inherited a hotel. The bad news: it has one of the cursed 7 gateways to hell in it. This would seemingly be also bad in general for someone in the hospitality business. First off, the hellishness of the place would guarantee the hotel never achieving 5 star status. I am sure some thrill seeking extreme sports junkies would book a room there for the sheer thrill of living so close to one of the 7 cursed gateways to hell, but the average family of four looking for good accommodations as they drive from New Mexico to Florida for their annual Disneyland trip are going to expect less gateways to hell. They already have spent all day with 2 kids cooped up in a car with the older brother saying "I'm not touching you!"  and coming as close to touching ...

Victor Frankenstein

Image
Victor Frankenstein (2015) The Plot: A scientist tries to make life from dead bodies Victor Frankenstein is a movie told through the eyes of his once hunchbacked assistant, Igor. Yes, Dr. Frankenstein cures him of his hunchback which naturally endears himself to Igor who was making a living as a freak in a sideshow at the circus. That's probably why Igor goes along with the good doctor's plans to assemble a body from dead parts and bring it to life.  Before assembling a man from dead body parts, its best to smart small with a chimpanzee for example Telling the story from Igor's point of view is for the best in this movie. I mean, first off, there's been many stories from Dr. Frankenstein's point of view so we already know the story of the mad genius. If we told it from the monster's point of view here, he would be dead; no thoughts. Then ZAP! burst of electricity. Open eyes, see that everyone is now trying to kill you so you fight back until you are dead again...

Dr. Jeckyll and Sister Hyde

Image
Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde (1971) The Plot: A scientist invents a potion to turn himself into a sexy murderess Y am sure Dr. Jekyll had good intentions. He was doing all of this in the name of science, you see. You know he means business too as he has a whole table full of beakers filled with colored liquids bubbling. His goal is to just keep curing the world's most deadly diseases. He of course believes in his ability to do this, perhaps a little too much as he starts bending the meaning of terms such as "medical ethics" wildly. In order to cure these diseases he would need to live longer so the world can be blessed with his superior intellect. He resorts to stealing cadavers. In the name of science, of course.  Dr. Jekyll in sunny London He never does quite find the answers to stop aging. He does however, invent a serum that will change him into a female for a period of time. At first, he does what anyone would do in that situation, he orders an expensive red dress ...

Seedpeople

Image
Seedpeople (1992) The Plot: Evil alien plant spores crash to earth and start taking over the bodies of the local populace  Seedpeople. The title kind of tells you almost everything you need to know. There are seedpeople here. Alien plants from outer space arrive on earth. They are plants but they spawn what looks like mammals and bird/insects. I'm not totally sure the alien biology makes mush sense at all. There really wasn't much time to study these kind of things in a controlled scientific manner. Fortunately, the town has its crazy, but harmless scientist.  The newest rage in headgear It's the crazy scientist, (a role that would've been awesome if played by Dennis Hopper, but her is played by a lesser Hopper) who does most of the experimenting on finding a way to destroy the alien plant things. He does discover UV light is their weakness and naturally wears UV lights powered by a battery he totes around with him. He wonders why no one believes him. He also guzzlers...

Blood of the Vampire

Image
Blood of the Vampire (1958) The Plot: A former doctor turned prison warden conducts strange experiments on the inmates Blood of the Vampire, despite the title features no vampires. It does feature an evil doctor who works with blood but i guess Blood of the Doctor is not as intriguing a title. The aforementioned doctor is named Dr. Callistratus which smoothly and evilly rolls of the tongue. I'd be leery if I had an appointment with a doctor named Dr. Callistratus. Even if it was a dentist, I would probably think he was an evil dentist. Not to mention Dr. Callistratus has an assistant with physical abnormalities such as a pronounced limp, bulging non-blinking eye and an inability to talk. If that doesn't scream evil mad doctor, then I'm afraid nothing will.  Always take care of your evil assistants The good doctor likes to experiment on heart and blood  transfusions which seems ahead of his time int he 19th century, but of course, he does this unscrupulously on prison in...

Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo

Image
Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo (1977) The Plot: A cargo of dangerous spiders, a deadly cargo, if you will, is released on an unsuspecting small town In 1962, Jim Marshall founded Marshall Amplification ushering in a new era of amplifiers that super charged rock music. 15 years later, his invention helped save the small town of Finlayville, CA from  deadly infestation of venomous spiders. Tarantulas: The Deadly Cargo starts off innocently enough when coffee bean importers and totally law abiding citizens, Dr, Johnny Fever and Tom Atkins, procure the permits to import a large sum of coffee beans by legitimately paying the local law enforcement representative a fee. Unbeknownst to these totally by the books businessmen, the coffee bean cargo was infested with deadly spiders. The find this out soon enough when the litter buggers do the venomous thing and bite them mid flight causing them to crash the airplane  thus releasing their....deadly cargo! Two legitimate businessmen T...

The Frighteners

Image
The Frighteners (1996) The Plot: Michael J. Fox sees dead people The Frighteners is a movie of its time. Made in the mid-90s when CGI was first becoming prominent. Since this is a ghost story we get many, many CGI ghosts floating through objects, being run over by cars, emerging from mirrors, etc. The temptation to go overboard must have been too much to resist. Michael J Fox is a bit of a con man at first since he can see the ghosts, he befriends them in order to have them "haunt" someone so he can then come in and charge a fee so he can remove them. Sort of a con-man Ghostbuster. Sadly, I feel if this was something that could happen in the real world, the amount of Ghostbusting grifters would be many.  Everyone needs some ghost friends I've always wondered what kind of clothes ghosts would wear in the afterlife. Luckily, this movie answers that by saying you are stuck with whatever clothes you normally wore the year you died. There is no changing that out in the after...

Night of the Creeps

Image
Night of the Creeps (1986) The Plot: An alien infestation causes humans to become zombies and terrorize a college campus Night of the Creeps is a love letter to B movies of the 1950s and actually starts off in the 1950s when we see the alien infestation and zombification of the humans begin. The alien space slugs that landed on Earth have a penchant for entering through the mouth, killing the host turning them into zombies before the offspring explode the head releasing them into the wild to infect more people. The original zombie from the 50s is cryo-frozen in the lab and that is where we skip 27 years to 1986 and the real fun begins. Is there a draft in here? The action takes place on a college campus which features obnoxious frat boys. who are so obnoxious that you simply cannot wait for their eventual run in with the space slugs. There's hardly a single moment featuring any of the frat boys where they aren't swilling beer. Our heroes here are the 2 nerds who just want to ...
