Teenagers From Outer Space
Teenagers From Outer Space (1959)
The Plot: A teenager from outer space arrives on Earth as a precursor to invasion but has a change of heart once he meets some Earthlings.
When a teenager from outer space arrives in your neighborhood and introduces himself to you, I bet you would think he would have a weird name, Zortar or Trxtgrwkjj; anything but Derek. But here in this movie, the 2 aliens that arrive are named Derek and Thor, which is not a vaudeville act that toured exclusively in Minnesota in the late 1930s but rather 2 teenagers from space (although they look vaguely early 30ish, perhaps there is something in the water on Derek and Thor's home planet that ages them prematurely). Thor uses his fantastic focused disintegrating ray to kill a dog. This is a line that Derek will not cross. The disintegration of Sparky forces Derek to re-evaluate the choices he has made in his life. Why is he here with doggie disintegrator Thor millions of miles from his home planet scouting Earth to see if it is suitable for their herds of gargons, giant lobsters that will eat all living things on Earth? Derek recoils at this and in true teenager fashion, rebels against his authority figures in his life.

Derek, trying to remember where he parked his saucer |
He soon meets up with Betty, a precocious teenager in a flip haircut who lives with her kindly grandfather, who doesn't even charge Derek rent to live in his house within minutes of meeting him. Gramps should've been tipped off by Derek's Mork from Ork attire. Nanu Nanu, Gramps!

Shazbot! is that a focused disintegrating ray gun? |
Soon Thor is traipsing around town liberally using his focused disintegrating ray gun to turn anyone in his way into a skeleton. The body count of disintegrated people and pets is 7! The cops aren't much help, its the newspaper reporter who cracks the case of the disintegrated townsfolk. Soon the stark reality of rampaging 50 foot tall gargons is upon the populace. And the only focused disintegrating ray guns to be found are in the hands of Thor from Outer Space. It as at this point that Derek learns his dad is actually the Supreme Commander of the invading gargon force (don't ask, its complicated) and betrays his own kind by crashing the saucers full of gargons. Side note, Saucers full of Gargons is a lost Syd Barrett album from 1966. Derek sacrifices himself for the greater good of humanity. It's a bittersweet ending, but the locals are grateful, trucking in hundreds of pounds of butter and feasting for weeks on the gargons!
