Food of the Gods (1976)

The Plot: An unknown substance causes the animals of a remote island to grow to giant proportions and terrorize the populace

Morgan was just a professional football player looking for a weekend retreat with his buddies to a remote Island in Canada. What he didn't expect was the giant rats! Which left him at a serious disadvantage when the giant rats attacked. If he had only known about the giant rat infestation beforehand he could prepare with a stockpile of cheese perhaps. The travel agency brochure definitely left the part out about the giant rats.

What's the matter, Morgan? Chicken!

That was the hand Morgan was dealt. But it wasn't just the rats, there were also giant wasps, giant worms and giant chickens, which on the surface giant chickens do not seem so threatening, but just you wait until you are stuck in a confined space with a 7 foot tall rooster with a bad attitude! 

Hey! Got any Camembert?

Morgan was not on his own however, he was stuck with the corporate hack who sees dollar signs in commercializing the mysterious liquid that makes these animals grow to prodigious size. There's also a pregnant women, who despite being on the verge of giving birth, decides to vacation on a remote island. It's possible she too did not get the full facts about the giant animals. But either way, that exhibits poor decision making. 

It's like shooting rats on a roof!

This movie really just boils down to one thing, survival of the fittest. It's men vs. the giant rats. Luckily, despite now presumably having a brain the size of a Volkswagon beetle, the rats do not increase in intelligence. And despite not having a stockpile of gouda on hand, the men were able to outsmart the giant rats proving once again that man' intelligence is still greater than the common rat. 

Food of the Gods is a creature double feature type of affair and really does not disappoint. It's alot of fun watching giant rats, wasps, worms and chickens attack people. It's sort of a universal truth of the universe. I give Food of the Gods 6 giant chickens.

Sure there are some differences as they enlist the help of a Native American shaman instead of a gypsy medium. Although,  Tangina does show up briefly. It also ratchets up the possessed household objects where we get to see attacks from a chainsaw, electric wire, even Robbie's braces. Candyman

Candyman (1992) The Plot: A graduate student working on her thesis on folklore legends finds more than what she bargained for!   Despite the title, there is no candy in Candyman. Instead we get bees. Many, many bees. The worst of which are the bees filling a toilet. Toilet bees should not be a thing. It's probably the most disturbing thing in this movie. We should thank our lucky stars that we don;t have to check our toilets for bees on a regular basis.  My God! Toilet bees!   Candyman tells the story of a boogyman with a hook for a hand that appears when his name is said 5 times while gazing into a mirror. Go ahead, try doing that. I dare you. BWAHAHAHA! Virginia Madsen  doesn't believe this so she does that...and hilarity ensues! OK maybe not, death ensues. But not before she gets kissed by Candyman who has a mouthful of bees! Hellraiser

Hellraiser (1987) The Plot: A man who finds a strange object that opens an interdimensional rift and is killed, is resurrected but needs the blood of humans to return to his true form.   Frank buys a puzzle box from a strange man who then takes it home, solves it and promptly opens an interdimensional rift to hell where he is skewered by chains and ripped asunder. All in all, not his best day. Just goes to show you, never buy strange objects from junk dealers. It didn't work out well for Zach Galligan in Gremlins and it doesn't work out well here either. I don't know what's worse, the gremlins, or the demons here.  This may look like fun, but it's only fun if your idea of fun involves releasing demons from an interdimensional rift   After Frank's brother Larry returns to live in the house where he died and spills some of his own blood there, do we get the skinless resurrected body of Frank.
